When designing a business card, we recommend you first pick the business card style you would like to have and then design it based on that. We recommend this because some designs aren’t printable in some styles.
Another thing it’s essential to take into account is the bleeds. In printing, every design must have a bleed area to give printing machines room for error. In this area, you will find three mains sectors: bleed’s area, final (actual) size, and the safe zone. Anything in the bleed’s area is very unlikely to appear on the card. Anything in the final size is likely to be in the card, but there’s a chance it’s not. And finally, anything in the safe zone will definitely be on the business card. If your design has text or anything that must be in the final product, make sure it is in the safe zone.
If we use the standard size of business cards in the USA (3.5 x 2.0 inches), the size with bleeds would be 3.625 x 2.125 inches. On the other hand, the safe zone would be the opposite, 3.375 x 1.875 inches.

Printers can print business cards with many different combinations, but not every combination is possible. Below is a list of the factors you can change on a business card:
There are business card papers that cannot have some finishes or even straight corners (like plastic business cards). So to avoid back and forth, we always recommend our clients to start by picking the finish they would like to have and then see what other features can be added to the business card.

After 40 years of printing business cards in NYC and Japan, we have vast knowledge about what should be on a business card. For us, the most important information would be name, phone number, email, and website(if you have one). For businesses like restaurants, retail stores, or such, adding the business’ address is also a good idea.
What you put on your business card also depends on your industry and the business cards’ purpose. For example, if you need your business cards to attract customers, then adding information like coupons, offers, and services can be a good idea. Instead, if you need your business cards to be a way to give your information after meeting a client, then adding your contact information is more than enough. Of course, that would be considering you already shared with your client all the information you needed him to have.
Business cards are much more cost-effective when bought in larger quantities. So in many cases, the more business cards you print, the better it is. However, there are some reasons why you shouldn’t print too many cards at once, which we will list below:
Basically, if any information you have in your business card is likely to change for something else, it is best to print a small quantity and then print business cards in a larger amount.

Yes, you can print pictures on a business card. However, there are some things you have to keep into account before doing it.
Apart from that, if you need pictures printed on your card, we will make sure to give you the best recommendation!

There is no limit on the colors you can add to a business card. However, that depends on the ink you’re using. If the printer uses CMYK colors, there is no limit; but there is a limit if the printer uses Pantone colors.
In printing, there are two different ways to print: digital printing and offset printing. Digital printing uses CMYK colors, and since it is a digital printing technique, it can print as many colors as needed, although colors tend to vary in each set (not much, but they vary).
On the other side, we have offset printing. Here, printers need to prepare the inks manually (each Pantone color). This process creates limitations on the number of Pantone colors you can print on a single business card, varying from one to five. Five being the maximum colors you could add to a business card without making it unaffordable.
To give you an example of when to opt to use offset printing and not digital printing, we’ll use Coca-Cola as an example. Coca-Cola’s branding is exceptional, and one of the reasons it is like that is because they always use the same red color, no matter where you find it. To make sure their red color always looks the same, they use a Pantone color and print it in an offset printing machine; that way, there are little to no variations in how the color looks. If they used CMYK colors, variations would be more common.
To make the colors of your business cards always look the same, you have to use Pantone colors. If you also want your business card colors to be the same as other printing materials you have. In that case, you can use the same Pantone color across other stationery you have, and the color will be the same.
If your company doesn’t have Pantone colors picked yet, feel free to visit us and choose one from our Pantone books. When picking Pantone colors, it is best to do it live because colors on a screen look very different from what they look in real life.

Business cards can last years if they are taken care of properly. In our record books, we have 7-years-old business cards that still look great. There are two main reasons our business cards look good like that after so many years. The first one is that our papers and inks are of the highest quality; the second one is that we carefully store them in a cold, dry place in plastic business card slots.
However, we know that’s not the case for every business or person. When handling a business card, the card mustn’t be dirty, bend, or anything like that; and if you store your business cards in your wallet, chances are they will lose their quality over time (around two weeks). If you want your business cards to remain like new even after months or years, we recommend keeping them in a business card holder.
Also, if durability is the most important business card factor for you, plastic business cards might be your best option. Our recyclable plastic business cards can last long periods in a wallet or business card holders without losing quality at the same rate paper business cards do.
If you have any other questions, feel free to contact us at info@japanprint.com.
On average, you can keep up to 25-30 business cards in a wallet. The number of business cards you can keep in your wallet depends on the thickness of the business cards themselves. A standard business card thickness is 16pt, but you can find business cards up to 45pt thick. A credit card is 32pt thick.
However, most people won’t keep more than 5-10 business cards in their wallets, especially if they are thick. We can print business cards in any thickness, starting from 14pt to 45pt.
If you’re not sure about what thickness might best fit your business cards, feel free to visit our downtown NYC office and take a look at the business cards we have printed. You can also send us an email at info@japanprint.com.
The main difference between standard business cards and premium business cards is that standard business cards are plain and don’t have features. In contrast, premium business cards have features like Spot UV, Thermography, Foil, and more. Premium business cards also use premium papers like suede.
Under the standard line, we offer business cards like 14pt uncoated, 16pt dull/matte business cards, and 16pt glossy business cards. Even though they are standard business cards, they still offer a high-quality presentation for their price; the only factor you would be losing when ordering these cards is that they won’t be significantly different. In case you need to print business cards in bulk, these cards are a great pick if you’re looking for the most cost-effective business card possible without losing too much on quality.
We offer business cards in all sizes, but some custom sizes are not available for some finishes or papers. Here’s a list of our most requested business card sizes:
Our business card thicknesses start at 14pt and go up to 42pt. The thickness availability depends on the type of card you are printing. It is also essential to consider that the thicker the business cards, the less you will carry with you or for your clients to save them in their wallets.
For your reference: a credit card is 30pt thick.
